Monument record TR 25 SW 386 - Site of The Bull's Head pub, 9 The Street, Adisham

The original site of The Bull's Head pub, 9 The Street, Adisham. The structure was recorded during historic building recording in 2017 prior to demolition in advance of proposed development. The first mention of The Bull's Head was in the 1740s and the structure is likely to be early 18th century in date. On an 1873 map of the site, the pub is associated with a building labelled as smithy, which appears to have existed until the mid 20th century. This map also depicts the main building of the pub as longer than its later form, suggesting changes to the internal and external fabric are likely to have taken place.

The structure was two storeys high, fronted by a split façade, and with a slate pitched roof. Several modern extensions had been added to the original building, including the southern elevation of the structure and to the roof. Much of the interior of the building was too dangerous to survey as some demolition work had already taken place prior to the commencement of the appraisal. Elements of the ground-floor including the bar and a mock Tudor fireplace were observed.

The historic buildings recording includes reference to historical events which took place at or related to the Bull's Head, including several inquests, and other legal proceedings. (1)
