Full Description

Part of a later medieval building, a small pit, a post-hole, and a large (2.9m x 2m x 0.68m) probable quarry pit were identified during an archaeological evaluation of The Anchor Inn, Littlebourne. The work was completed in 2017 in advance of proposed residential development at the site.

The building was represented by a wall footing for a timber framed building and two associated layers of flooring forming part of the south west corner of a building dated to the later medieval period.
An assemblage of over 20 sherds of pottery dating to the medieval period was identified during the evaluation, alongside a corroded sheet of copper alloy, and a piece of iron slag, probably blacksmithing waste, and a single cow leg bone. (1)
