Full Description
A series of undated and post-medieval to modern pits, post-holes, and linear features, alongside a layer of late medieval - early post-medieval colluvium, were identified during an evaluation at land at School Lane, Newington, carried out in 2024 ahead of proposed development. Finds recovered during the evaluation suggested that the activity dating from the medieval to post-medieval and modern periods was probable at or in the vicinity of the site. Finds of ceramic building material dating to the medieval and post-medieval periods are likely to have been dispersed as a result of ploughing or other agricultural activity.
A few finds of prehistoric burnt flint and pottery were recovered from the layer of colluvium. These are thought to have originated from activity dating from this period in the wider area. (1)
