Full Description
Undated and post-medieval features including post-holes, a well, an animal burial, hedgerow, and ditches were identified during an evaluation carried out at Station Road, Teynham in 2019. Features dated to the post-medieval and modern periods included the animal burial (a pig), a series of post-holes, several pits, a 19th-20th century brick well capped with a concrete slab, and several tree throws. Undated features included ditches, pits, and post-holes.
Artefacts recovered from the features comprised oyster shell, ceramic building material (including tile), post-medieval pottery, animal remains, burnt flint, clay pipe fragments, and glass vessel fragments, alongside several metal artefacts including sheet, a ring fitting, and a nail. (1)
Another undated post-hole was identified during a strip, map, and sample excavation carried out in 2019. The feature measured 0.46m in length, 0.42m in width and 0.21m depth. The posthole is located 5m to the northeast of two possible postholes identified to the east of the site during the previous archaeological evaluation. (2)
