Full Description
An undated pit, a post-medieval field boundary, and a modern agricultural building were identified during a watching brief carried out during groundworks on the Leysdown Connections, Isle of Sheppey in 2018.
The pit measured 0.68m in length, 0.36m in width, and up to 0.26m in depth. The feature contained burnt flint and burnt daub within its fill, leading to its interpretation as a fire pit or field oven.
The ditch was aligned NNW-SSE and measured over 11.5m in length, 0.83-1.1m in width, and 0.18m in depth. The fill of the ditch contained two fragments of late 18th-early 19th century pottery. This feature was interpreted as a formed field boundary dating from the later post-medieval period.
The concrete foundations of an agricultural building measuring 11.5m in length by 8m in width were identified to the north east. Through map evidence and aerial photography, the structure was dated to the later 19th century. (1)
