Full Description
Plans, sections and elevations for a proposed new prison and gaoler's house at Dymchurch survive in the Centre for Kentish Studies. The drawings are by the surveyor George Fry, and are dated 28th May 1864. The proposed new building was to face the church. It has a single pile gaoler's house at the front and a single storey cell block to the rear. The gaoler's house has three rooms on each floor, with a parlour, kitchen and scullery at ground floor level and three bedrooms on the first floor. The cell block, which is separated from the house by an entrance hall, has two single cells and one double cell; there were to be water closets in the cells. To the rear is a walled yard and on the right-hand side is the prisoners' airing yard. The prison was to be build of brick with Portland stone dressings, at an estimated cost of #1000.
