Monument record TQ 97 SW 1241 - Late Iron Age and Roman field system and refuse pit, land off Plover Road, Minster on Sea

A late Iron Age and Roman field system and refuse pit were identified during an evaluation carried out on land off Plover Road, Minster on Sea. The refuse pit measured over 5m in length, 4.2m in width, and 0.2m in depth. This feature contained pottery sherds dating to between 50-175 AD. Some of the ditches at the site formed part of a field system and a possible rectilinear enclosure.

Some features containing Late Iron Age and Roman pottery also contained ferromanganese, livestock remains, daub, and flecks of charcoal. Other artefacts associated with this phase of occupation at the site included a fragment of Roman tegula.

A number of features remained unexcavated and were not assigned to a specific period. These included one or two possible trackways, drainage ditches, post-holes, pits, and ditches. Furthermore, 6 pieces of later prehistoric worked flint were also recovered, however, these artefacts may be residual in character. The features and artefacts dating from the Iron Age and Roman periods potentially indicated the proximity of a potential settlement or a farmstead to the north of the site. (1)
