Full Description
At the end of World War II a number of former military camps were pressed into use as prisons in response to the rising prison population. In 1947 the camp at Aldington opened as a prison which was to be a satelite of HMP Maidstone. Their relationship was to echo the one between Wakefield and New Hall where Star inmates were held in more open conditions. In 1961 Aldington became a senior Detention Centre and in 1986 it became a Category C adult male prison. Inmates are held in refurbished huts which were originally divided into cubicles. Subsequently most of the huts were divided into cells. Within the complex there are separate communal washrooms and a dining room. The huts are linked by a series of corridors. (1)
