Full Description
A gaol and house of correction existed in Tenterden by 1819, when it was capable of holding five prisoners in two classes. The following year one of the classes was enlarged and the gaol was repaired. There were four rooms in 1834. The prison was discontinued following the 1865 Prison Act. The following year, alterations to the building were proposed, and plans, elevations and sections survive in the Centre for Kentish Studies. They show a two-storey, two-room building with a central doorway and staircase, and a rear yard. (1)
