Full Description

A possible prehistoric settlement was identified during a geophysical survey carried out at Redrow, Paddock Wood in 2021. Potential evidence for prehistoric activity was identified in the form of ring-ditch like features which may relate to roundhouses, recti-linear ditch-like features which could represent enclosures, and anomalies representing possible extraction features.

The main areas of possible activity comprised circular anomalies, three of which are recorded as measuring 9-13.6m in diameter and which may represent roundhouses. These were surrounded by rectilinear anomalies that could represent possible enclosures. One enclosure measured 29m in length by 25m in width. A series of features which could represent further enclosures or a series of ditches were also identified. Evidence for some features intercutting one another has been interpreted (1) as indicating at least several phases of activity taking place at the site. Several large ditches were also identified, one of which measured around 116m in length and 3m in width.

Potential evidence for quarrying was also identified in the form of an oval area measuring 23m in length by 12m in width located to the south east of the enclosures, with further anomalies identified as potential extraction features in other areas of the site. (1)
