Summary

A 15th century medieval brick clamp kiln was identified during an evaluation carried out at Wises Lane, Borden in 2023. The kiln had a lower level comprising a stoke pit and furnace tunnels, and an upper level comprising the fire chamber roof.

Full Description

A late medieval brick clamp kiln was identified during an evaluation carried out at Wises Lane, Borden in 2023. The kiln had a lower level comprising a stoke pit and furnace tunnels, and an upper level comprising the fire chamber roof. The report (2) states that the feature was provisionally dated to the late 15th century through comparison of the brick dimensions with the Standardized Brick Charter.

Late post-medieval to modern refuse pits were also identified during the evaluation. (1, 2)
