Summary

A public works prison for adult male convicts opened on 22 February 1877. A satelite of Chatham Convict Prison. By 1886-7 the work of building five magazines had been completed. Prison closed and buildings dismantled. The general location of the prison falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project, but no features associated with possible prison structures were identified during that survey.
