Full Description
Medieval pits, ditches, and several possible quarries were identified during an excavation carried out at Danedale Stables in 2022 by Swale and Thames Archaeological Survey Company. Some of the linear features are interpreted (1) as possible enclosures or field boundaries which could be related to domestic or agrarian activity. Several possible quarries were also identified at the site which may have been dug to extract sand or iron stone. The presence of a midden alongside finds including pottery and oyster shell fragments may be indicative of nearby domestic activity.
A hollow way was also identified at the site. Several pottery sherds recovered from the fill of the feature dated to the medieval period, however, these are interpreted (1) are probably residual, and the feature broadly aligns with a trackway on the 1st edition OS Map. (1)
