Monument record TQ 85 SE 372 - Medieval ditch, Parapet House, Maidstone Road

A medieval ditch was identified during an evaluation carried out at Parapet House, Maidstone Road in 2017. The ditch measured 0.65-0.98m in width and 0.27-0.30m in depth, and contained medieval pottery sherds, alongside fragments of iron, copper alloy, slag, and burnt flint. The ditch was located in three trenches and its projected course between each trench is shown on the GIS depiction.

A post-medieval fence line and later post-medieval ceramic building material were also identified during the evaluation. (1)

Further invesigation during the exacavation phase produced 12th-13th century pottery and confirmed the ditch was a single feature and probably a field boundary. (2)
