Monument record TQ 95 SW 179 - Prehistoric ditch and tree bole, The Paddock, Grove House

A prehistoric ditch and possible prehistoric tree bole were identified during an evaluation carried out at The Paddock, Grove House in 2017 in advance of proposed residential development at the site. Four pieces of struck flint were recovered rom the fill of the ditch, and one from subsoil in another trench. A piece of fire cracked flint was also recovered from the fill of the tree bole feature.

The small assemblage of struck flint was provisionally dated to some time between the Mesolithic and early Bronze Age periods. However, as the ditch is interpreted (1) as a potential agricultural feature, the flint, if associated with the ditch as a primary deposit contemporary with the feature, is likely to date to the Neolithic - early Bronze Age rather than Mesolithic period.
