Monument record TR 06 SW 1549 - Post-medieval quarry, post-holes, and ?field boundary ditch, Preston Fields, Salters Lane

A post-medieval quarry, post-holes, and a possible field boundary ditch was identified during an excavation carried out at Preston Fields, Salters Lane in 2022-2023 in advance of proposed residential development at the site. The quarry and post-hole cluster were located to the north of the site, in the second, smaller excavation area, whilst the possible field boundary ditch was located bisecting the larger excavation area, crossing north-west to south east over the area.

The quarry is likely to have been used to excavate clay and silt deposits, and contained a few fragments of post-medieval ceramic material within its fill. The post-holes and ditch are interpreted (1) as evidence of agricultural activity taking place at the site, with the post-holes representing allotments or a hop plantation, and the ditch either marking a field boundary and/or being used for drainage.
