Full Description

Possible Mesolithic and prehistoric worked flint was identified during an evaluation and watching brief carried out at Barton Hill Drive, Isle of Sheppey in 2018. “19 pieces of chipped stone of indeterminate prehistoric date, although the presence of two narrow blade fragments suggests a later Mesolithic date... The chipped stone assemblage is comprised of 18 pieces of struck flint and one of chert. With the exception of the borer/piercer none of the flints appear to show evidence of secondary modification. Nine of the artefacts appear show signs of heat treatment such as crazing, loss of mass, colour change and pitting” (from the report, 1).
