Full Description

In 2020, twenty two trenches were evaluated by TVAS ahead of a new access road to the Circuit. One of these (Trench 10) revealed two pits that were both around 70cm in diameter and contained a fill of dark gey-black silty clay with inclusions of charcoal and fire-cracked flint. Between the two pits was a gully 75cm wide and 20cm deep containing mid-grey/brown silty clay fill and fire-cracked flint. A tiny piece of possible prehistoric pottery was also found.

Within the Roman contexts (see TR 24 NW 268) were found six residual and abraded prehistoric pottery sherds dated to Late Bronze Age - Iron Age. They presumably represent a background scatter from manuring the fields with domestic waste.

Six struck flints (four flakes and two possible cores) were also recovered from Roman contexts (see TR 24 NW 268), but probably date between the Late Neolithic - Bronze Age. (1)
