Monument record TR 23 NW 841 - Sandstone quarry, Folkestone Harbour

Summary

The gritty sandstone of the Cretaceous Folkestone Beds at Folkestone Harbour and foreshore is known from historical accounts and the identification of the stone in a number of Mediaeval buildings. The stone was used at Dover Castle in 1226, and great quantities were used at Queensborough Castle at Sheppey in 1362-5. It was also used in the construction of Sandgate Cstle. The quarrying of Folkestone stone continued until at least the Commonwealth period when stone was exported to Dunkirk. There is now no evidence of the quarries.
