Monument record TR 04 SW 608 - Medieval pottery and possible ditch, Waterside Park, Ashford

Summary

Ten trenches were opened as part of an evaluation in 2025 ahead of development of the site. Much modern truncation was encountered due to previous construction and electricity cables and sewerage. A short length of ditch was found in Trench 3, of possible Medieval date due to the Medieval pot sherds and Ceramic Building Material, but could be a later date due to possible reworking.

Full Description

Trench 3 contained a N-S aligned ditch that was 1.76m wide. Within the ditch fill were four sherds of a 13th / 14th century pot / bowl in Ashford / Wealden sandy ware, which were moderately - extensively abraded. The vessel has been dated to between 1225 and 1325/50 AD. It is suggested by the report authors (1) that due to the reworked nature of the sherds, this could have resulted from manuring using earlier domestic waste.
Two pieces of CBM, also from the ditch fill, are likely to be Medieval roof tile. Two pieces of prehistoric struck flint (a spall and a flake) were also in the ditch fill, but are redeposited and are likely Neolithic / Bronze Age. (1)
