Monument record TR 36 NE 2677 - Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age features representing agricultural activity land adjacent to Nash Road and Salmestone Grange, Margate

During excavations on land off Nash Road near Margate a group of features including enclosures, field boundaries, a possible droveway and trackway, groups of pits and ditches were recorded on site and interpreted as dating to the Late Neolithic - early Bronze Age period.

Transient prehistoric activity on the site may have commenced by the Mesolithic/ Early Neolithic period but occupation of a more permanent nature seems to have first occurred in the Late Neolithic/ Early Bronze Age. This sub- phase is characterized by a possible droveway, a narrower trackway, and three possible enclosures, suggesting agricultural activity, possibly animal husbandry, beyond the margins of a settlement. In the later sub phase activity appeared to intensify A series of enclosures replaced possible Droveway 1 in Area 1D, along with a number of pits, while the possible enclosure in Area 1B was in turn replaced by a trackway or double- ditched enclosure. A field boundary replaced the possible enclosure in Area 2, while a further enclosure, possible field boundary and pits were recorded in Area 1A. These features again suggested agricultural activities on the margins of a settlement.
