Monument record TR 36 NE 2679 - Group of late Iron Age/Early Roman graves land adjacent to Nash Road and Salmestone Grange, Margate

During excavations on land off Nash Road near Margate a small group of burials comprising two definite and one probable graves, suggesting settlement activity in the vicinity. These were of a late Iron Age/early Roman date.

Grave 1, Group 2, on a northeast- southwest alignment in the east of Area 1A, contained the remains of a single potential adult of indeterminate sex, the remains being in extremely poor condition. Five, probably residual Late Neolithic/ Bronze Age worked flints were recovered from the grave fill, along with thirteen heavily corroded iron nails. Grave 4, Group 3, lay immediately to the west of Grave 1 and was of similar shape and orientation but smaller. This feature had originally been recorded as a pit but it seems most likely that it was a grave for an infant, the bones not surviving. Three probably residual worked flint flakes dating to the Bronze Age were recovered from the fill, along with two sherds of pottery dating to 50BC- AD70. Grave 2, Group 12, on a northwest- southeast alignment in the east of Area 1C contained the poorly preserved remains of a possibly male, young- mid adult. Ten heavily corroded iron nails were recovered from the grave fill, along with several fragments of animal bone.
