Full Description
A post-medieval pond was investigated during a watching brief carried out in 2012 at Sissinghurst Castle. The groundworks revealed a straightforward stratigraphic sequence consisting of topsoil, brick rubble, pond silt, and natural clay. The only artefact predating the post-medieval era was a fragment of medieval floor tile. The vast majority of material encountered was probably 20th century in date. The exact date that the pond was backfilled could not be established. A small assemblage of finds was recovered, including pottery, ceramic building material, glass, bulk iron, plastic, a registered coin, and animal bone. (1)
