Monument record TQ 86 SE 366 - Roman temple, 99 High Street, Newington

A Roman temple was identified during a series of excavations and archaeological investigations at 99 High Street, Newington. The temple formed part of an Iron Age and Roman agricultural and industrial settlement (TQ 86 SE 365), comprising rectilinear enclosures, granaries, kilns, inhumations and cremations, roads, and field boundaries.

Two flint foundations of the temple were observed in a square-shaped arrangement to the north east of the site. The two foundations formed an inner cellar and and outer ambulatory, and the shrine itself was enclosed by two squared ditches and a bank overlooking the road. The temple was also associated with a number of artefact rich ritual shafts and offering pits, some of which were dug into the enclosure of the temple. (1)
