Summary

The earthwork remains of a possible medieval or post medieval sea wall embankment mapped from RAF aerial photographs taken in 1947 and subsequently destroyed through clay extraction for the local cement industry.The embankment is aligned NE-SW and terminates close to the sea wall along Cliffe Creek. It has been cut by the 19th century tramway from the former Johnson Cliff Cement Works to the Nine Elms Works at the mouth of Cliffe Creek.

Full Description

The earthwork remains of a possible medieval or post medieval sea wall embankment centred at TQ 7205 7657 which has been mapped from RAF aerial photographs taken in 1947 and subsequently destroyed through clay extraction for the local cement industry.
The embankment is aligned NE-SW and can be traced for 500m between TQ 7181 7644 and TQ 7222 7664, terminating close to the sea wall along Cliffe Creek. It has been cut by the 19th century tramway from the former Johnson Cliff Cement Works to the Nine Elms Works at the mouth of Cliffe Creek. A further fragment of sea wall, possibly part of the same sea defences was recorded to the south-east (Monument Number 1531626). A second longer sea wall (1531623) extends NE across the marsh to the head of Cliffe Creek. (1)
