Monument record TQ 87 NE 1212 - ?Medieval or post medieval counter wall, Yantlet Creek

Summary

The earthwork remains several lengths of bank on the southern bank of the Yantlet Creek, on the Isle of Grain which are the remains of a former counter wall of medieval or post medieval date. The eastern bank followed a sinuous course from the edge of the creek in a roughly south-westerly direction. The western bank branched off this, extending northwards to the creek . Between these two parallel arms of bank lies the slight earthwork remains of earlier former salt works (NMR Monument number: 418658). Part of the counter wall bank was reused in the 20th century to carry a branch railway line transporting guns from the main line to the velocity testing range (which was used for testing naval guns) to the north. These banks were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. A later counter wall recorded on the current Ordnance Survey map can be seen to intersect these banks.
