Full Description
Later prehistoric pits and linear features were identified during an evaluation carried out at Manor View Nursery, Temple Ewell by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2017. Artefacts recovered from the fills of some features dated them to the early-middle Iron Age, whilst others were broadly dated to the later prehistoric period. Finds included worked flint, pottery sherds, and the complete base stone of a probable saddle quern made of Folkestone greensand and apparently deliberately placed within the base of an early-middle Iron Age pit.
Environmental sampling was carried out in two of the Iron Age pits which identified fragments of burnt flint, small quantities of (possibyl residual) slag/hammerscale, charcoal fragments, and charred plant remains including barley, wheat glume bases and seeds. (1)
