Full Description
Undated pits and a ditch were identified at Heartenoak Road, Hawkhurst during an evaluation carried out in 2019. One of the pits contained a small assemblage of bloomery slag derived from iron working carried out at the site. Whilst it is impossible to date the assemblage with any certainty, it is likely to derive from some time between the Iron Age and the medieval periods. The "tap slag exhibits a partial viscous flow suggesting the waste was not hot enough to flow in true ‘liquid’ form. This is more a trait of a pre Roman slags" (from the original report, 1). (1)
