Full Description
Probable medieval ironworking features were identified during an evaluation carried out at 10 County Lodge Road, Appledore in 2018. These comprised four linear features, possibly representing flues, some of which contained deposits of iron slag and charcoal. Dating of pottery at the site indicated that two phases of activity had taken place in the area during the medieval period. The first phase of activity extended up to 1275 AD, and included activity associated with ironworking, whilst the second phase appeared to date to later in the medieval period and was associated with the construction of a 14th century enclosure (TQ 92 NE 177).
These features may be contemporary with medieval industrial features (TQ 92 NE 181) identified around 150m to the north east during another evaluation carried out in 2018. (1)
