Full Description
Unpublished excavation. Description taken from 1923 unpublished report notes by C.K. Rhodes
Area of excavated land 298ft by 70ft. A number of pits were found which all contained pottery of Roman or "early" date and other finds. The largest pit (F approx 14' by 7') seemed to have been formed by the break down of the sides of a number of graves. Within the pit a large quantity of pottery was found, some being identical to black pottery found at Henistbury. Evidence of fire, animals bones and some burnt human bones (inparticular a smal portion of the lower jaw including an incisor tooth were also noted. Holes in the floor of the pit were full of flints and interprited as post-holes.
In the fill of the pit a bronze fibula of La Tene III types was found (pin and spring missing) now in the BM.
Pit (H) was identified as a pit dewlling. Three pots in a fragmented state were found.
(J) A wide trench which prior to excavation extended right across the brow of the hill, as the other end may be still seem on the opposite site of the quarry. Within the trench 89 pieces of Roman and early British pottery, a thin sheet of bronze, a small bit of glass and a dressed flint-stone.
The finds seem to have gone to Deal Town Hall. (1)
The total cost of the excavation was less than £15.0.0
