Full Description
Second World War Royal Navy Training Establishment at the National Sea Training School, Commercial Place, Gravesend, for conscripts who had chosen to serve in the Merchant Navy. It was commissioned Gordon in 1941 and HMS Gordon in 1943. It provided basic and key skills needed for service, utilising the rooms of the 4 storey Victorian brick building and the jetty on the riverside for seamanship skills. It was decommissioned as a naval estblishment in 1944 and resumed normal Merchant Navy training by late in the year or early 1945. The building was demolished c. 1980. The site is now occupied by apartments known as Heritage Quay.
