Monument record TR 36 NE 2657 - Later Iron age and Early Roman field system

During archaeological excavations conducted ahead of the development of land at Haine Lodge off Spratling Road a rectilinear field system, was uncovered. The earliest features, probably of pre-Roman origin, comprised four short lengths of heavily truncated ditch that might be fragments of a field system. Subsequently, a rectilinear field system, closely aligned on the cardinal points was laid-out across the area. Although some development in the arrangement can be seen, there was often difficulty determining the relationship between individual ditches during excavation, so a definitive statement of its evolution cannot be closely made and most of the recovered pottery dates to the first century BC/AD. In its developed form, the ditch system formed rectilinear fields, possibly separated in places by east-west aligned drove roads. Later additions to the arrangement appear to be ditches forming three potential enclosures added during its development. Two of these were quite small and possibly represented animal corrals.
