Monument record TR 36 NE 2662 - Late Iron Age/Early Roman field system

Summary

During largescale excavations off Manston Road, Ramsgate, evidence for an extensive Late Iron age/Early Roman field system were identified. This field system comprised a series of mainly very long ditch alignments on a rectilinear and perpendicular arrangement. Associated pottery was datable to the first century BC/AD and indicates that these features were potentially infilled by the mid Romano-British period.

Full Description

aligned broadly north-west to south-east and north-east to south-west, some seemingly recut in places. The field system was quite extensive, extending beyond the excavation limits, with similar arrangements recorded within other excavation areas located to the east and west of the overall site. Included within the field system were ditches possibly representative of a former droveway. The field system was stratigraphically later but on a similar alignment to the late Bronze Age/early Iron Age pattern of field boundaries. The layout of the fields suggests that the site was entirely used for farming at this time. There is no direct evidence of settlement although there are numerous undated post-holes and pits which are possibly associated with the field systems. Dating evidence suggests that some or all the field systems could predate the Roman Conquest, and it indicates that these features were potentially infilled by the mid Romano-British period. Environmental samples contained charred plant remains that revealed the presence of hulled cereals which were the main grains cultivated during the Iron Age and Romano-British period.
