Monument record TR 36 NE 2663 - Roman Quarries and other features

During largescale excavations off Manston Road, Ramsgate, Some evidence for Romano British actiivity was recorded, this follows an earlier intensive phase of first century BA- first century AD activity. The first to second century AD sees a clear change in the use of the site, with the earlier field systems having not continued in use or been replaced. There is clear evidence for quarrying, with further minimal activity having been represented by a pit, post-hole and ditch. Each quarry was cut into chalk which may have been the target of the quarrying activity, as well as perhaps the collection of flint nodules.Much of the Romano-British pottery assemblage from the site was dominated by first- to secondcentury examples, although later Romano-British sherds were present in smaller quantities and recovered as residual finds from later features. There is no evidence of settlement and the fairly low quantity of features is not indicative of intensive occupation. (information summarised from source) (1)
