Monument record TR 36 NE 2664 - Possible Roman cremation burial

During largescale excavations off Manston Road, Ramsgate, a posible Roman period cremation burial was uncovered. It was located in a small sub-circular pit within an area of intense ditch activity of Excavation Area 4. It was 0.50m by 0.49m and 0.25m deep, with steep sides and a flat base. It contained a single fill of silty clay from which an assemblage of animal bone (unburnt) was recovered, along with a flint hammerstone, some daub, worked flints and a large lump of unworked chalk. An iron nail was also recovered; however, this remains undatedTrace mammal/human bone was recovered from an environmental sample, along with burnt flints (40g) and some heat - affected clay. Although the feature contained little datable cultural material, it has been placed in this phase as it is likely to be late prehistoric or Romano-British in date based on its similarities with and proximity to a group of first- to second-century cremation burials (several of which were undated) identified on an excavation site located immediately adjacent to the PDA (information summarised from source) (1)
