Monument record TR 36 NE 2665 - Late Anglo Saxon/Norman and Medieval settlement activity

During largescale excavations off Manston Road, Ramsgate, evidence for Saxo-Norman and medieval settlement activity was recorded. This was focussed in a small area in the south western corner of the site and included a series of enclosure ditches, as well as a Sunken-Featured Building (SFB) and a scattered group of undated, though possibly associated pits and post-holes; these are features indicative of a former settlement. Environmental samples taken from several Phase 8 features contained charred plant remains that consisted mainly of cereal grains, particularly free-threshing wheat and also barley, rye and oats, the four main cereals during the medieval period. Two features have been assigned to a slightly later medieval phase, although there is some potential cross-over with the previous phase. These include a further SFB and enclosure ditch.
